Date, Kumquat, and Ginger Chutney

Ingredients

1/2 cup orange juice
3 tablespoons chopped shallot
3 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons chopped crystallized ginger
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
1 teaspoon finely grated orange peel
1/8 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper
Large pinch of ground cloves
Large pinch of salt
16 dates, pitted, halved lengthwise, then halved crosswise
10 kumquats, sliced, seeded
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

Preparation

  1. Combine first 9 ingredients in medium saucepan. Bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer 3 minutes. Add dates and kumquats; simmer 1 minute longer (chutney thickens when chilled). Season with salt and pepper; stir in cilantro. Chill uncovered until cold. DO AHEAD: Can be made 8 hours ahead. Cover and keep chilled.
